This project is funded by Defra as part of the £200 million Flood and Coastal Innovation Programmes which is managed by the Environment Agency. The programmes will drive innovation in flood and coastal resilience and adaptation to a changing climate.

Action Plan

Introduction

This page outlines specific measures to be taken at each stage of the flood warnings. These actions will be displayed whenever an alert is issued in the community hub. The plan covers protocols for situations where there is no risk of flooding ('All Clear'), when flooding is possible ('Alert'), and when flooding is expected ('Warning').

To ensure you never miss an alert, if you have not already done so, please subscribe to receive SMS or email alerts.

All Clear

Flood risk is low. However, you can still be prepared for the future with the following actions:

  • Sign up for the Environment Agency’s flood warnings
  • Learn where to find local flood information
  • Prepare a flood emergency kit
  • Check insurance covers groundwater flooding
  • Consider a Property Flood Resilience Survey to better protect your home
  • Check your existing flood protection measures are ready to employ, including any pumps
  • Have a plan for raising furniture and white goods off the floor for long periods of time
  • Have a plan (for example a backup generator) in case the power is out for long periods of time
  • Have a plan in case you cannot use toilets, sinks and showers for long periods of time, such as arranging with local friends and family for support. Or, see if any community facilities have been set up

Flood Alert - Flooding is possible

A flood alert means that flooding is possible so you should prepare now. If a flood alert is issued, you should:

  • Ensure your emergency flood kit is prepared and accessible
  • Deploy any flood protections measure you may have
  • Move items of value upwards within the house
  • Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water
  • Check any backup generators are working
  • Check alternative toilet, laundry, and showering arrangements are in place, such as arranging with local friends and family for support. Or, see if any community facilities have been set up
  • Check on any neighbours and local friends to ensure they are aware of the risk and prepared

Flood Warning - Flooding is Expected

A flood warning means that flooding is expected so you should act now. If a warning is issued, you should:

  • Check flood protection measures are operating
  • Implement plans for alternative power and utilities
  • Report flooding to warn others and seek community help
  • Photograph and document damage as evidence for claims
  • Call 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger.
  • If you need to travel check for flooding and get road traffic information.
